Interesting History Snippets
Lathes
Around 1300 BC the first two-person lathes was developed by Ancient
Egyptians. The one person would use a sharpened tool to shape the
wood while the other person would turn the material with a rope. Turning
methods on lathes improved to the turning bow method and later the
hand-operated method was replaced with a foot pedal, called spring
pole lathes. The 20th century Industrial Revolution provided new methods
like water wheels and steam engine lathes allowing faster and heavier
production via line shafting. Line shafting was later replaced by
a single electric motors on each lathe. The 1950’s introduced
the first numerical controlled lathes later evolving to CNC computerized
lathes. Conventional / Manual lathes still plays a big role in the
engineering industry.
Press Brakes
The shaping of metal evolved from using large hammers to steam or
wind hammers to what we have today, press brakes controlled by electric
motors and hydraulics combined with dies (top tooling and V-block
tooling) for different shapes. Fly-wheel driven press brakes was upgraded
to hydraulic press brakes capable of more precise ram control for
higher accuracy. Press brakes was later equipped with a backstop /
back gauge improving the handling and position of metal sheets. The
latest technology provides press brakes with multi-axis CNC back gauge
and ram control.
